What is a self aligning ball bearing ?

A self-aligning ball bearing is a bearing with an inner ring, two rows of balls, with the cage that holds them, and an outer ring. The inner ring consists of two races in continuous grooves and a spherical race on the outer ring. This construction allows the bearing to withstand misalignment by self-aligning. This bearing is recommended where shaft deflection is possible. These bearings experience less friction than other types of bearings, which results in minimal heat build-up. They can reduce noise and vibration levels and have a high radial load capacity at high speeds.

What are the different types of self-aligning ball bearings?

This product group is available with both cylindrical and tapered bores, as well as open and sealed. Bearings with a tapered bore are identified by a "K" in the order number. For example: 1208-EKTN9-SKF. These products are fitted with an adapter sleeve to secure the bearing on the shaft. The sleeves therefore make assembly easier.

The sealed bearings, with integrated seals, are lubricated with grease. The lubrication is "guaranteed for life" and requires no maintenance. The seals are made of NBR material and can withstand oil from -40°C to +100°C.

Unsealed bearings are mainly composed of a cage (holding the balls) made of steel, polyamide or brass. Steel cages have a low carbon content. This material provides high strength by reducing friction and wear. Polyamide cages combine strength and elasticity. Brass cages can be used at operating temperatures of up to 250°C.

How to choose a self-aligning ball bearing?

If you don't have a reference listed on your spherical ball bearing, there are a few factors to consider when choosing this product. The first factor is the dimensions. Indeed, as with other bearings, it is necessary to know its inner diameter, its outer diameter and its thickness. The second factor to consider is the environment in which it is mounted. If your bearing is immersed in oil, you may want to consider a non-sealed bearing. If this is not the case, you should consider a sealed bearing. The last factor to consider is the technical characteristics of the product. This means determining the type of cage required, the type of bore and the radial internal clearance of the bearing. These products are available with normal clearance, lower clearance (C2), higher clearance (C3) or even higher clearance (C4).
