What is a linear bearing?

Linear bearings, also called ball bearings, are bearings that can be used for translational shaft guides. These bearings provide good precision, low friction and high performance. They are regularly used in industrial applications such as automated systems, robots and machine tools.

What are the different types of linear bearings?

There are several categories of linear bearings for the many applications that exist, including:

Compact linear bearings (KH)

These linear bearings have steel balls, a plastic cage and a sheet metal outer ring. They can be offered sealed or unsealed depending on the application and your needs.

Massive, closed series linear bearings (KB - LME)

These products have steel balls, a plastic cage and a steel outer ring. This assembly produces a homogeneous linear motion. This bearing is closed and can be sold with or without seal.

Massive open series linear bearings (LME**OP)

Open solid ball sockets are constructed in the same way as closed solid ball sockets. The only difference is that they are open. They are used when the guide shaft is deformed and it is necessary to eliminate this deformation.

Massive, adjustable series linear bearings

These bearings have the same characteristics as solid closed ball bearings. However, they are slotted so that they can be mounted in bearings with adjustable housings. This allows the clearance between the shaft and the ball bushing to be adjusted.

Solid tandem linear bearings (KBL)

Tandem solid ball bushings have the dimensions (inner and outer diameters) and tolerances of solid ball bushings, but in double the length.

Linear bearings with flange (round or square) (KBK)

These flanged bearings have the same features as solid ball bearings, but with a flange. This flange provides an additional means of attachment. The advantage of this flange is to reduce the length of the bore and the overall size of the bearing.

In this product category, you will also find linear bearing housings and linear guides.

How to choose a linear bearing?

In order to choose the bearing you need, it is necessary to have the part number or the technical characteristics that define it.

The choice of a linear bearing depends on several criteria, including:

- The dimensions (inside diameter, outside diameter and length)

- Type (compact, solid closed, solid open, adjustable, flanged, tandem)

- The speed of rotation

- The load to be supported

- The environment (temperature, humidity)
