What is an x-ring?

An X-ring, also known as a quadrilobe seal, is a double-acting seal used for both static and dynamic applications. This seal resembles the standard O-ring but with four lobes in the shape of an "X", hence the name. This shape allows it to achieve lower friction and better sealing than o-rings.

What is it used for?

The x-ring seals are used to seal static and dynamic (rotation) assemblies. For rotation speeds above 0.5 m/s, it is advisable to use a rotary shaft seal. For a lower speed, it is necessary that the shaft rotates inside the x-ring seal. If the x-ring is mounted in the groove of a housing, it may be dragged along by the housing.

How to choose your quadrilobe seal ?

In order to choose the x-ring you need, it is necessary to know its dimensions. For this type of product, you need to measure its inside diameter as well as its section (thickness). To have precise measurements, we recommend you to take them with a caliper.

You will then have to select the desired material. For this type of joint, there are three main materials which are :

  • NBR : mainly used to be in contact with oils and hydrocarbons from -40 °C to +110 °C. This model is also compatible with water.
  • FPM : It is also used to be in contact with oils and hydrocarbons. It is more proposed for a need in high temperature since it can support from -20 °C to +200 °C.
  • EPDM : used to be in contact with brake fluid and water. In terms of temperature, it can withstand from -50 °C to +150 °C.
